Autechre Ambience

In Early 2001 or thereabouts, I was listening to "Large with Everything" on WXCI one night. Autechre had just released a new album, Confield, and the radio started in with the unmistakable ambience of Autechre. Jumbled beats, thumping irregular bass, indescribable keys and sounds. Only, it wasn't Autechre. It turned out to be a local outfit called "Fantastic Superhero." I was floored, and immediately set out recruit them to my fledgling label. I was able to get in contact with one of the guys and got a copy of their demo, "Un Choc Electrique." We agreed the release would be on 12" vinyl, and if I'm not mistaken, maybe even a picture disc. Everything was agreed upon, and I was thrilled about Sonic Syrup's first foray into electronic music. They told me they were switching email accounts and they'd be in touch in a week. Then...nothing. They just disappeared. I tried to track them down, but over the years I've found nothing. So here it is. Listen and weep. How would this have sounded in 2001? What kind of impact could this album have had on the scene?

Dave's Demo Hell

In the 90's, NME used to have a column called "Holly's Demo Hell" in which the aforementioned music scribe would review demos submitted using all the venom and wit that was typical of a weekly UK music rag back then. Having gotten a few hundred demos over the years, ranging from blindingly brilliant to gut-wrenchingly awful, I can relate.

Here's a link to great blog featuring some 1987 La's and a 1990 Verve demos. Rough around the edges, sure. But they must have perked up a few ears, no doubt.

The La's demo features the usual staple of songs that most die-hards have heard a dozen variations of by now, Still, the songs are magic. I especially like the "There She Goes" with the heavy drums on the intro. The Verve one is really interesting, since you can notice them evolving a bit toward the final tracks, from "baggy" to psychedelic. The shocking thing is there's no hint of how powerful Richard Ashcroft's voice is. He sounds like he's doing his best Ian Brown imitation, just like 90% of the UK frontmen at that time. The rest of the band is in top form though. All the pieces were there right from the start.

Fuzzy Christmas

Here is a compilation of Christmas tunes, most being released or discovered by me just this year. Someday I'll have to create a multivolume set that mixes genres, but for now, these are just the songs I feel like listening to this Christmas, so I thought I'd share. The real gems here are the X-ray Pop "Fuzzy Christmas" and Spectrum "Santa Claus." I first heard these, back to back, years ago on WXCI's "Large with Everything" radio show hosted by Greg Vegas. He was my John Peel, playing obscure classics of every genre, and the latest avant garde. Enjoy!

Fourhead - DJ Foosball

One of the earliest releases on Clarecords, the label run by Dan and Heather at www.tonevendor.com was the DJ Foosball EP by Fourhead. Originally released as a cassette, it contained 5 songs of shoegaze meets jungle/drum-n-base. For those wondering what that lost My Bloody Valentine record from the early 90's would have sound like, this may be as close as we'll even get. Here is the entire EP along with 3 extra songs sent to me by the artist (thanks Mike).

La's album reissued - again

The past few months found me busier than a whore on a saturday night, which must explain how I missed the "Deluxe Edition" reissue of the La's album. I just ordered it, and am curious to hear the songs recorded by various producers. I actually have this abum on cassette (bought in 1990), the remastered CD with bonus tracks (from 2001), and the wonderful BBC Sessions album. Drop Nineteens

A few years ago I stumbled upon these recordings of the Drop Nineteens early demos. Unlike the feedback-drenched pop of the debut album Delaware, these are just plain ambient guitar noise, with some chanting vocals thrown into the mix. Mesmerizing, and very MBV-inspired. I actually like this better than any of their official recordings. A must for fans of Lovesliescrusing!

Ambient Bliss

Belong are a electronic duo with two releases to their name so far. Their album, October Language, is a downright humid, organic, and blissful collection of songs that would sound good alongside anything on the Ambient Pop collections put out by Kompakt. A few months ago they released an EP of cover songs, washed out in aural fuzz.

This was a demo I got just before putting the label of hiatus. Had I continued, this certainly would have seen a proper release. Recorded in 2004 by Ryan Potts, who later started using the name Aquarelle (a demo of which I hope to post someday). How to describe? Pretty, delicate, snowy. Somewhere between Lovesliescrushing and Xennakis.

Running the label had it's share of headaches. Musicians always late delivering masters; agreeing on artwork; begging me to loan them money so they could pay their taxes. But it had its highlights as well. I got to work with legends like Simon Dine and Scott Cortez. I learned a lot, often the hard way: creating artwork; using adobe illustrator; the four-color printing process; web design; promotion; distribution. And I got lots of cool stuff sent to me for free. On this blog I'd like to start sharing some of the demo discs from projects that fizzled out, artists who just disappeared, and a few other gems that have come my way.

Love is Noise

The new Verve single is streaming from their myspace page. I saw them perform this in New York a few months ago and my opinion of it remains the same - it would make a great song for a Richard Ashcroft solo album. It's a decent song, very 2008. But for a Verve song, especially a comeback single, it rings a little hollow. But only a little! It's good to have them back. I just hope the album delivers.
